The Western Peloponnesian bay and coastline, from the Prefecture of Ilia all the way down to Messenia, provide nestingbeaches to loggerhead sea turtles known as Caretta caretta. This is also the place that the second largest reproductive population of this species of the Mediterranean calls home.
You may choose to volunteer to help the Caretta caretta at Kyparissia Bay under the guidance of NGO Archelon, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. Indeed, a local chapter can be found atthe village of Kalo Nero.
As a volunteer you would conduct daytime and nighttime patrols, raise awareness with beachgoers and local populations, detect nests and install protective “fencing” as well as shading structures, after which you may enjoy watching hatchlings make their way to sea.
