At the foot of Elea’s forest, which is amongst Greece’s last coastal forests, loggerhead sea turtles known as Caretta caretta place more than 1,450 nests each year. They are also fond of the beaches Lagouvardos and Golden Coast (a.k.a. Mati) as a place to lay their eggs. Every August, visitors and volunteers help the weakest hatchlings make their way safely to sea. This unique experience is particularly educational for children.
