The Peloponnese is fortunate to enjoy a geographical position where East meets West. The coasts of Messenia have, however, been pillaged by pirates of the Mediterranean many times over. In the heyday of piracy, Proti Island, specifically the Strait of Katoulias was used as a base for privateer Katoulias. In this natural seaport, Katoulias, who hailed from the infamous region of Mani, would hide his boat and attack boats that sought refuge in the Bay of Grammeno. His crew would climb over the rocks and attack from up high, pillage the unsuspecting boat and hide the spoils on Proti.
